Part II: Prostate Laser SurgeryThroughout the night a nurse came in to check my catheter bag and emptied it when needed. Also had my vital signs taken periodically. Tuesday, September 11, 2007Nothing happened until 8:00 A. M. when Dr Salva showed up to pull the catheter. First he pumped water into my bladder so I could show him that I could pee which I did. It was actually a bloody mess since my pee was read from bleeding inside. The nurse finally got me some breakfast (scrambled eggs, banana, two juices to drink), instructed me on discharge papers and prescriptions for pain and infection. Toni and I went to CVS to order both prescriptions. We also picked up men’s absorption guards since I was leaking and will probable continue to leak for a few days. Overall the procedure went OK. Some pain from IV needle in my right hand and some discomfort from the catheter. Hard to get around without assistance when you are hooked up to IVs. I needed assistance from a nurse to go to and return from the bathroom. Toni picked my up at the Main Entrance of the Springfield Hospital at 10:40 A. M. I am now home, cleaned up, fed by Toni (her famous omelet and sausage links with hot tea and two rice cakes), and writing this down for historical reference. I have a follow up appointment with Dr. Salva on September 17, 2007 at 11:45 A. M. , Springfield Hospital. Toni is going with me. Copyright Toni & Roy Star 2007During the afternoon and into the evening I experienced pain while urinating. The pain increased during the night to the point that I urinated only a few drops. Toni said it may be swelling inside the penis or the prostate. The pain intensity increased as I applied pressure to urinate. At times the pressure was almost unbearable. Wednesday, September 12, 2007I called Dr. Salva’s office in the Delaware County Hospital at 9:30 A. M. to explain my situation. I was informed to come to the office so I could be looked at by one of the Nurses on duty. At this point my urinating was down to a few drops no matter how much pressure I applied. Toni and I left our apartment at approximately 10:30 A. M. and arrived at the office at approximately 11:15. Naturally there was road construction on State Road by the Drexel Shopping Center. We arrived at the office and I was almost immediately taken to one of the rooms. The nurse proceeded to take an ultra sound to determine how much water I had in my bladder. She stated it was about 800 milliliters. She then inserted a catheter into my bladder draining it. The nurse left the catheter in me and instructed me to return on Friday, September 14, 2007 to have it removed. By that time the swelling should be reduced enough so that I could urinate correctly. Friday, September 14, 2007Since September 12, 2007, the catheter has allowed me to urinate. However, I had difficulty in my mobility and cleanliness along a shut down of bowel movements. This is getting to be a concern for me. Toni and I arrived at Dr. Salva’s office in the Delaware County Hospital a few minutes before 10:00 A. M. per my scheduled appointment. I was taken into one of the treatment rooms and the same nurse took care of me. She inserted a quantity of water into my bladder before pulling out the catheter. After the catheter was removed I had to urinate into a plastic urinal so she could measure my output quantity against her input quantity. She said the measurement was OK. Afterwards Dr. Salva came in to talk with me. He had a small blue plastic bag in one of his hands. He handed me three samples of “Prosed” which is an anti inflammatory medicine to reduce my prostate and penis swelling. It relieves pain, burning, and spasm associated with lower urinary tract discomfort (UTL). I am to take one pill every six hours as needed. I started taking one pill at 11:00 A. M. and another at 4:00 P. M. I will follow that regiment until I run out of samples. I have a prescription from Dr. Salva for more medication. I must say that so far this prostate surgery has been a somewhat intense journey for me. I did have a small bowel movement earlier this evening at approximately 5:15 P. M. Toni says that is how it starts. The actual avalanche will probably start in the morning. Per Dr. Salva I am no longer taking Flomax. The medications I am taking for the prostate surgery are listed below. 1. Prosed by tablet for lower urinary tract discomfort2. Ciprofloxacin HCL 500mg Taran by tablet to prevent any infection from my prostate biopsy3. Colace 100 mg by tablet for stool softener Saturday, September 15, 2007Toni and I went to bed at 8:30 P. M. last night exhausted from the week’s events. I found that I had to urinate throughout the night approximately every half hour to hour. Also starting at 9:30 P. M. , I started to move my bowels. This movement is still going on during the early morning hours so my colon should be reduced in size thus reducing pressure on my prostate. The straining pain when urinating seems to be decreasing. The flow is steadier. I took one “Prosed” tablet this morning along with one Ciprofloxacin tablet. I will stop using the Ciprofloxacin tablet when I run out in the next couple of days. Toni is getting my Prosed prescription filled this morning at the CVS pharmacy on MacDade Blvd. I anticipate that I will need these pills for a while since they reduce swelling and inflammation thus allowing better urination. Sunday, September 16, 2007Toni and I went to bed at 8:45 P. M. last night. Throughout the night I urinated frequently every half hour to hour again as last night. I had one bowel movement this morning. Toni and I are not sure what is causing my urination frequency. We are going to make up a list of questions to ask Dr. Salva tomorrow during my scheduled appointment with him at 11:45 A. M. I am still drinking water frequently to wash out any surgery residue. I took my last Ciprofloxacin tablet this morning at approximately 7:15 A. M. I also took a Prosed tablet at 8:00 A. M. this morning with a full glass of water. I just had a second bowel movement at 8:48 A. M. Monday, September 17, 2007I met with Dr. Salva for my appointment. He showed me in depth the surgery he did on my prostate and bladder. We also discussed long term effects on my urinating. He asked me to start taking Flomax again to relax the prostate. He also gave me a sample of 21 tablets called Vesicare 5mg. I am to take one pill every 24 hours if the Flomax does not work. This tablet will calm down the surgery area. I have a follow up appointment for September 25, 2007 at 12:45 P. Salva does not have the prostate biopsy results yet I am cleared to return to work as long as I feel that I can drive safely Lifting restriction is still on I am not to lift more than the weight of a 1600 hours Dr Salva called me at home My prostate biopsy showed no signs of cancer however he stated that it seems I have had an inflammation of the prostate for some time I asked him what can be done about the inflammation Dr Salva said that the laser surgery should take care of it I am flowing well now with no straining I am leaking a few drops occasionally I am wearing a protective shield to absorb the leaking I am wearing the shield at work alsoSaturday, September 22, 2007So far no further problems Healing seems to be going well I am still taking Prosed and Flomax tablets along with stool softenerSunday, September 23, 2007I am going to go without the protective shield to see if I am still leaking any from my bladder This morning it felt like there was nothing leaking This will confirm whether I am or notTuesday, September 26, 2007I am not leaking but since yesterday have some blood in my urine The blood comes out first then the urine The blood quantity is more than a few drops Dr Salva stated that I would have some discharge from he healing process so I am thinking the blood is part of the healing process The blood is somewhat dark in color I’ll see how it goes over the next day or two If it continues I will call Dr Salva to validate that the blood is part of the healing process and not something elseThursday, September 27, 2007Still having some blood coming out when I begin to flow This morning I had some leakage and this afternoon So far the leakage is minimal I will continue to monitor the situationSunday, September 30, 2007I have occasionally some leakage seemed to back up in the channelThursday, October 11, 2007Went to appointment to have catheter removed Catheter removed at 1300, blood in urine as expected Blood stopped approximately at 1500 By 1700 urine flow slowed down There maybe a scab in the way Urine flow is not normal, like a spray Also had two bowl movements since I was backed up from Tuesday Tried to warm penis to melt any scab in the way At 1800 finally urinated Used warm washcloth against penis and bladder to open channel and reduce or melt any scab in the channel Urine flow was normal About a to 1 cup came out Also took CIPRO and Prosed pills earlier I also talked with Dr Salva concerning the following:1 How much more can I expect such as blood discharge and blocking Answer: I should be through the woods He did not expect me to have blocking again2 Where can I go if blocking happens over a weekend Answer: Call the answering service to contact the doctor on call If that does not work, go to the emergency room at Springfield Hospital3 How do I prevent blocking Answer: Drink plenty of water and fluids so flushing can occur4 I am keeping my Monday appointment with Dr SalvaFriday, October 12, 2007Urinated overnight A little bit of blood when I urinated at 0445 At work I urinated numerous times and had three bowl movements At 1135 urinated with some blood and a scab At 1154 less blood At 1330 more blood The blood and scabs coming out lasted until 1700 At 1800 the urine color was normal At 1810 the urine color was normalMonday, October 15, 2007A little bit of blood came out when I had a bowl movement this morning at work Otherwise, the urine is yellowish and flows good Saw Dr Salva this morning for my appointment We reviewed my healing process So far so good I will continue to take the CIPRO pills for infection (one more to go in the morning), Prosed for burning (have quite a few to take still) and Flomax until further notice I have another appointment on November 12, 2007 to check my healing evening the urine is normal with no bloodFriday, October 19, 2007Finally getting results from the surgery Flow is strong with no obstructions No blood or scabs coming out I will continue to monitor healing progressTuesday, October 30, 2007I stopped taking Prosed yesterday to see my reaction if any So far no reaction I am flowing strong and seem to emptying my bladder I have a check up
